Recently I read an informative article on cloud computing and thought it would be great content for this post. Having worked with SaaS solutions and companies for many, many years, I am truly amazed at how widespread cloud computing has caught on.
For some background, the 3 cloud computing platforms of Saas, IaaS, & PaaS are explained below, although the article doesn’t contain any data on PaaS:
• SaaS – Software-as-a-service is a model of software delivery where the software is hosted on the internet by a 3rd party which provides the customer seamless access, upgrades, maintenance, and support. An example would be Salesforce.com or Workday.
• PaaS – Platform-as-a-service is a complete development and deployment environment in the cloud, with resources that enable you to deliver everything from simple cloud-based apps to sophisticated, cloud-enabled enterprise applications.. An example would be AWS (Amazon Web Services).
• IaaS – Infrastructure-as-a-service is service is is an instant computing infrastructure, provisioned and managed over the Internet. This helps avoid the expense and complexity of buying and managing physical servers and other datacenter infrastructure, as companies only have to manage their software. An example would be Microsoft Azure or Rackspace.
The article stated according to Gartner, that the worldwide worldwide public cloud services market is forecast to grow 17% in 2020 to a total of $266.4 billion, up from $227.8 billion in 2019. The largest market segment will remain SaaS increasing to $116 billion next year. That is followed by IaaS which will reach $50 billion in 2020.
